Charles C Johnson applying for: Maintenance Worker, WG4749-05 announcement number DRTO-95-1 K A S O C S 1) Skill in operating motorized equipment to include riding lawn mowers, small tractor with front bucket, electric carts, weed eaters, chain saws, power tools and a variety of hand tools. I became very familiar with riding lawn mowers and weed eaters while working at Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. Lawn maintenance was one of my main duties. Besides using them I had to do maintenance and repair on them (gas, oil, tires, sharpen blades, change deck on mower, change weed eater head, add more string). I used chain saws a good deal at Loxahatchee. I cut down Melaleuca and Brazilian Pepper as part of my exotic vegetation control duties, and used them for trimming large branches and cutting fence posts and rails as part of my lawn maintenance work. I was sort of the unofficial blade sharpener as I had the best luck using the chain sharpening tool. We had electric carts at Loxahatchee, but I did not normally drive them. I did have to drive them a little bit sometimes while they were at the shop for cleaning or repair. We only had big tractors with front buckets at Loxahatchee, and I was not supposed to drive them. I did use a big back hoe for a few hours in Montana helping my dad put in a drain field at a house he was building (1978?). I can and have used basic tools like wrenches, socket sets (either hand ratchet or air powered), screwdrivers, breaker bars, oil filter wrench, electric meters, grease gun, oil can, spark plug gaping gauges, battery chargers, jumper cables, tire repair kits, jacks, hydraulic lifts, pressure cleaners, winches, vice grips, tire irons, hammers, hatchets, forks, hand drill, drill press, grinding wheel, circular saw, hand saw, chain saws, belt sander, orbital sander, shovel, rake, post hole digger, pulaski, hedge trimmers, pruning shears, garbage picker, trowel, jitterbug, paintbrush, paint roller, various paint spray equipment, backpack air blower, different sorts of hand sprayers (for herbicide), and timing lights. Except for the fork, timing light, electric meter, spark plug gap gauge, paint sprayers, and oil filter wrench I have used these tools on the job while at Loxahatchee. I used the paint spray equipment at Johnson Paint Company and James Newman Workroom. I put the tools away where I got them (especially on the job-everyone was very jealous of their tools and tended to lock them up or hide them) and clean them if dirty. Charles C Johnson applying for: Maintenance Worker, WG4749-05 announcement number DRTO-95-1 K A S O C S 2) Ability to perform custodial duties and assist journeyman with minor repairs in carpentry, plumbing, electrical, flooring, and mechanical repairs. As far as custodial duties go I am the custodian at James Newman Workroom, and at my own house. When I worked as a painter I would sometimes thoroughly clean apartments for the decorator or contractor when all the construction was finished. At Loxahatchee one of my duties was garbage collection, including picking up garbage off the ground. At Loxahatchee I did a good bit of carpentry. I helped build towers, fix boardwalks and fences, put on roofs, put glass in exhibits, and build kiosks. I helped tear up an old asphalt tile floor and clean the exposed concrete floor in one of the residences at Loxahatchee. Because I helped my father build houses in Montana, and also helped my parents build their house in Royal Palm Beach Florida, I have at least a little experience in any aspect of construction that is needed for building a house and that doesn't legally require a specialized license. I have done some minor plumbing (sink drain, lawn sprinklers) and electrical work (new outlets, ceiling lights and fans) at my current apartment. I kind of have to since the landlords live in Canada, and as the only renter I sort of look after the place. As far as mechanical repairs go, on my own time I have and can change oil, change air filter, change fuel filter, change oil filter, lubricate, check & add fluids (brake, power steering, battery, transmission, differential). I have replaced wheel bearings, radiator, starter, starter solenoid, battery & cables, alternator, headlights, tail lights, turn signal-tail-parking-dome-map- instrument panel-backup lights, signal flasher, high/low beam switch, radio, speakers, fuel pump (mechanical and electric), gas tank, universal joint, drive shaft, entire rear end, tie rod ends, Pitman arm, shocks, mirrors, spark plugs & wires, distributor cap & rotor, belts, hoses, brake pads and cylinders, various gaskets, and wipers. I have rebuilt carburetor and brake wheel cylinders. I can flush a radiator. I can plug a hole in a tire. I have used a volt-ohm-amp meter to find and fix wiring problems and set the timing of spark plugs. I have put shims in door hinges so the doors close properly and fixed broken or loose linkages for door locks and transmissions. I helped mount some tires and install some winches while working for Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge. I would occasionally help out the mechanic there when I didn't have anything else to do. I also sometimes worked on lawn mowers, chain saws, and weed eaters while at Loxahatchee and was responsible for oiling and fueling vehicles (including air boats) used, and lubricating the air boats, fire pumpers and boat trailers I (and sometimes others) used.
